About Hakone Estate and Gardens
Hill and Pond with UH - Stine era photo.jpg

Hakone Estate and Gardens is one of the oldest residential-style Japanese gardens open to the public in the Western Hemisphere. First established as a private summer retreat in 1915, today Hakone is a treasured sanctuary connecting visitors of all ages with nature, culture, and history as they explore the tranquil beauty of our 18-acre grounds.

Stroll around Hakone's iconic hill and koi pond garden to immerse in a living museum of traditional Japanese landscaping, while surrounded by historic buildings authentically crafted in Japan over 100 years ago. Along with rotating art exhibits in our Cultural Exchange Center, Hakone hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year, and is a premiere venue for private event rentals.
